''manav seva madhav seva '' : RSS

RSS was founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, who was a doctor in the central Indian city of Nagpur. Hedgewar as a medical student in Kolkata had been a part of the revolutionary activities of the Anushilan Samiti and Jugantar striving to free India from British rul. He had been charged with sedition in 1921 by the British Administration and was imprisoned for a year. After returning to Nagpur, he was briefly a member of Indian National Congress before he left it in 1925, to form the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. After the formation of the RSS, Hedgewar kept the organization from having any direct affiliation with any of the political organisations then fighting British rule. But Hedgewar and teams of volunteers, took part in the Indian National Congress, led movements against the British rule. Hedgewar was arrested in the Jungle Satyagraha agitation in 1931 and served a second term in prison.
The RSS was established as a educational body whose objective was to train a group of Hindus, who on the basis of their character would work to unite the Hindu community so that India could become an Independent country and a creative society

The RSS Sarsanghachalak Shri Mohan Bhagwat has clarified that the Sangh will not directly involve itself in politics and that it was for the BJP to settle its problems. On Jinnah controversy, Shri Bhagwat said that the Sangh considered Jinnah responsible for the Partition of the country. To clarify the Sangh stand Shri Mohan Bhagwat addressed a press conference in the capital on Friday (August 28, 2009) evening. Earlier, addressing a press conference in Jammu on August 21, 2009, the Sarsanghachalak said: "If Hindus become united, India will become strong and glorious."

Sangh not for politics
ON Shri Arun Shourie's suggestion that ‘RSS should take control of BJP’, RSS Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh Dr Manmohan Vaidya said in a press statement issued in New Delhi on August 25 that ‘the RSS after elaborate discussion has decided its goal of man-making and social organisation. Running a political party is not the task of the Sangh. It is the duty of the BJP to run it properly, remove the shortcomings, if any, and take it forward. The Sangh can only provide them any suggestion or help if they ask for it. The Sangh extends such help to all other organisations. The Sangh will continue to do its work of social organisation that it has been doing.’
